Does it matter what kids are reading as long as they are in fact reading?
This is a fabulous article with some debatable points about the value of what kids are reading in and out of school. Some people believe that it doesn’t matter what kids read as long as they read and that it is a teacher’s job to incite a love of reading in adolescents through exposure to high interest texts. Others believe that in school teachers should be exposing adolescents to certain high quality literary works. Reading level comes into play. Students with low reading levels need opportunities to practice texts at their instructional reading level, however, should these students be excluded from exposure to high quality literature because it is far above their reading level? Students need to be pushed, the question is how much and how far and what impact will it have on their literacy and love of reading.
