Why kids are left behind and struggle with content area reading

Adolescents often get left behind if they don’t learn to read by third grade. This article does a fabulous job spelling out what exactly happens to these students who are left behind and why content area reading in secondary school is so important. Reading science research is completely different than reading a novel and requires different skills. Reading a social studies text requires certain skills and moreover, reading authentic History texts require yet another additional skill set.

There are so many great points in this article. The author highlights the importance of literacy coaches and why these positions are often cut before change is seen in a school.

Content area reading and the problem of adolescent literacy isn’t going away but thankfully it’s getting more attention and hopefully with time, solutions will start to bridge the gap for these struggling students.
